High above the border the wind whispers secrets of Otay Mesa. This sprawling community in southern San Diego holds a rich history. It’s a place where the Kumeyaay language echoes in the very name Otay. The meaning is debated some say it means brushy others big mountain. Mesa of course is Spanish for plateau.
From this very spot aviation pioneer John J Montgomery took flight. In 1883 or 1884 he made history. He achieved the first controlled flights in the Western Hemisphere. He used gliders soaring from the mesa’s western rim. This quiet plateau witnessed a pivotal moment in aviation’s dawn.
Otay Mesa’s story isn’t just about the past. It’s a place of constant change. Annexed from San Diego County in 1957 it continued to expand. In 1985 nearly four thousand more acres joined the community. This rapid growth transformed the area.
But there’s a hidden side to Otay Mesa. Since 2010 seven cross border tunnels have been discovered. These tunnels connected warehouses here with Mexico. They were used for illegal activities highlighting the complexities of this border region.
The Otay Mesa Port of Entry is a major thoroughfare. It’s one of two crossings in San Diego. Trucks often prefer this crossing to the busier San Ysidro. The new Otay Mesa East Port of Entry is expected to open as early as 2028. This expansion will only increase Otay Mesa’s importance in international trade.
Then there’s the Cross Border Xpress. This innovative pedestrian bridge connects to Tijuana International Airport. It’s a unique structure. It’s a 45000 square foot facility located right here. It makes Tijuana Airport the world’s first geographically binational airport.
And the energy that powers this bustling area? A portion comes from the 603 megawatt Otay Mesa Energy Center. This power plant which came online in 2009 supports the area’s growth. The Pio Pico Energy Center will provide an additional 300 megawatts of power.
