Hidden amidst the industrial landscape of Otay Mesa, a powerhouse hums with energy. This is the Otay Mesa Energy Center. A key player in San Diego’s energy grid, it’s more than just a power plant. It’s a story of innovation and adaptation. Otay Mesa Energy Center began operations in October 2009. It represents a significant step towards cleaner energy production in California. The facility employs a combined cycle technology. This technology uses two natural gas-fired combustion turbine generators. Each generator feeds its own heat recovery system. Then a single steam turbine generator takes over, boosting efficiency and reducing emissions. Otay Mesa Energy Center is the largest air-cooled power plant in California. This innovative cooling method conserves precious water resources. The plant’s commitment to environmental responsibility extends beyond water conservation. It features state-of-the-art emission controls. These make it one of the cleanest power plants in the country. The center generates enough electricity to power over 500,000 homes. Over its lifespan, Otay Mesa Energy Center has undergone several upgrades and modifications. This included separating and increasing the height of the HRSG/Turbine stacks, adding duct firing and an auxiliary boiler. Later, the auxiliary boiler was removed and the combustion turbine components were upgraded with Advanced Gas Path components for increased efficiency. The project faced various ownership changes over the years. It went from PG&E Generating to Calpine Corporation’s Otay Mesa Generating Company, then to Otay Mesa Energy Center, LLC, and back to Calpine Corporation. Currently, it is owned by Otay Mesa Energy Center LLC. Otay Mesa Energy Center embodies the ongoing evolution of power generation. It demonstrates a commitment to balancing energy needs with environmental stewardship.
