1909. Imagine a young Mary Andersson, penning her poignant tales of childhood within the crowded tenement buildings of Östra Sorgenfri. Here in Östra Sorgenfri, nestled between Nobelvägen and the railway towards Ystad, north of Amiralsgatan, life was a tapestry of interwoven stories. Östra Sorgenfri, a residential area in Malmö, within the district of Södra Innerstaden and partly in Centrum, was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a community forged in shared experiences. The heart of Östra Sorgenfri pulsed with life along streets like Agneslundsvägen, Östra Farmvägen, and Sorgenfrivägen. The northern part, encompassing Sankt Pauli södra kyrkogård, belonged to Centrum, while the rest fell under Södra Innerstaden. Östra Farmvägen cut a north-south path through the area, intersected by Spånehusvägen. Mid-20th-century buildings, primarily apartments, defined the landscape. Within this neighborhood, a smaller enclave known as Gröningen, bordered by Östra Farmvägen and Amiralsgatan, stood out with its distinctive red brick architecture, a unifying feature. This architectural harmony masked a past marked by poverty. Before World War II, Östra Sorgenfri bore the stigma of overcrowded housing for struggling families, the very setting that inspired Mary Andersson’s powerful narratives. Today, Stenkulaskolan, a school serving grades F-9, stands as a testament to the area’s evolution. Named after Anders Oskar Stenkula, a school inspector in Malmö from 1874–1909, the school, along with Mary Andersson’s playground and Lindens preschool, represents the enduring spirit of Östra Sorgenfri. They serve as reminders of a past that shaped the present, a past etched in the words of Mary Andersson and echoed in the laughter of children playing on the playground that bears her name. From humble beginnings to a vibrant present, Östra Sorgenfri’s story continues to unfold.
