Bornholm’s biggest and oldest round church stands before you. This is Østerlars Church. Dating back to 1150, Østerlars Church is more than just a religious site. It’s a fortress and a historical treasure.

Østerlars Church stands just north of Østerlars village. It is about 5 kilometers south of Gudhjem. The church is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. Locals called him Lars. That is where the name Østerlars comes from.

Imagine the 12th century. Pirates and invaders threatened the Baltic Sea trade routes. Bornholm was vulnerable. The people needed a place of worship. They also needed a refuge. Østerlars Church was built to serve both purposes.

The round shape wasn’t just for show. It offered better defense. The thick walls are more than 2 meters thick. They could withstand attacks. Originally, the church lacked a roof. An outer passage allowed defenders to move around. Holes supported a parapet walk.

Consider the mystery of its origins. Some believe the Knights Templar inspired it. Others suggest it was an observatory. The truth is likely a mix of reasons. Defense, religion, and perhaps a bit of astronomy all played a role.

Step inside Østerlars Church. Look up at the central column. It is decorated with frescoes from 1350. These paintings tell biblical stories. See the Annunciation. Follow the Passion of Christ. Witness the Day of Judgement. A huge dragon symbolizes hell. These images taught religious lessons to people who couldn’t understand Latin sermons.

These frescoes were hidden for centuries. During the Reformation, they were covered with limewash. They were rediscovered in 1882. Restoration work brought them back to life.

Notice the bell tower. It stands apart from the church. This tower was the original entrance. It was also a gate tower. Two runestones are here. One dates back to 1070. It says Broder and Edmund raised the stone for their father Sigmund.

Over the centuries, Østerlars Church has evolved. Buttresses were added in the 16th century. A new conical roof replaced the old one in the 17th century. The porch dates from 1870. The church’s wooden shingle roof was added around 1744.

Østerlars Church is still active. Services are held regularly. Tourists are welcome. Climb to the top for stunning views. Imagine the defenders looking out. Picture the faithful seeking solace. Feel the weight of history in these ancient stones.

Today, Østerlars Church attracts around 120,000 visitors each year. It is one of Bornholm’s most popular attractions. Østerlars Church is a symbol of Bornholm’s resilience. It represents the island’s rich past. Its unique architecture and fascinating history make it a must-see destination. As you leave Østerlars, remember its dual role. It was both a sanctuary and a stronghold.
