Ever wondered about Frankfurt’s East End? Welcome to Ostend a vibrant district brimming with history.

Ostend means East End. This area east of Frankfurt’s old city walls began as farmland and gardens. It transformed into a residential area in the mid-19th century attracting middle-class workers.

But Ostend’s story is richer than that. A significant Jewish community flourished here. They settled near religious and social institutions. By 1895 almost a quarter of Ostend’s population was Jewish. Sadly this vibrant community was destroyed under the Nazis. Many were forced into “Jew’s Houses” in Ostend. Then horrifically they were deported from the Großmarkthalle.

The Großmarkthalle a huge wholesale market is another key part of Ostend’s history. It is now gone but its significance remains. The European Central Bank’s impressive new headquarters stands nearby. The area around the former Großmarkthalle and the Main river continues to transform.

Ostend also boasts the Frankfurt Zoological Garden one of Germany’s oldest zoos. It houses 450 different species. You can easily spend a whole day there exploring.

The Hanauer Landstraße is Ostend’s main road. It is now a glamorous area. You’ll find nightclubs fashion stores and trendy furniture shops here. However, quieter residential areas exist tucked between the busy Landstraße and the district’s edges. Ostend is known for its multicultural atmosphere.

The Ostendstraße S-Bahn station offers excellent transport links. There are also subway and tram connections. Ostbahnhof the East Station provides long-distance connections. So Ostend offers a mix of history culture and modern amenities. It’s easy to reach and surprisingly diverse. It’s a place of contrasts a testament to resilience and a district continuing to evolve. It is a Frankfurt district that warrants a closer look.
