Behold the Oscar Wilde Memorial Sculpture. A vibrant testament to a complex man.

This isn’t just a statue. It’s a story sculpted in stone and bronze. It commemorates Oscar Wilde the famous Irish poet and playwright. It stands proudly in Merrion Square near his childhood home. Danny Osborne the English sculptor created it. The Guinness Ireland Group commissioned the work. Unveiled in 1997 by Wilde’s grandson Merlin Holland it immediately captivated Dublin.

The initial budget of 20000 Irish pounds swelled to 45000. Marble alone proved insufficient. Osborne used stones from three continents. Green nephrite jade from British Columbia forms the torso. Pink thulite from Norway adds a splash of color. The legs are Norwegian Blue Pearl granite. Black Indian charnockite shoes are finished with bronze shoelaces. A Trinity College tie made from glazed porcelain completes the ensemble. Three rings adorn Wilde’s fingers. His wedding ring sits beside two scarabs one for good luck the other for bad.

Wilde reclines on a massive quartz boulder. Osborne himself found it in the Wicklow Mountains. Two pillars flank the boulder. One features Wilde’s wife Constance Lloyd. She is depicted nude and pregnant. The other pillar displays Dionysus the Greek god of drama and wine. Both figures are bronze and granite. Inscriptions from Wilde’s poems adorn the pillars. The handwriting of famous Irish figures including Seamus Heaney John B Keane and Michael D Higgins is replicated.

Three people living near Osborne’s West Cork studio modeled for the sculptures. The statue’s unveiling marked the first Wilde memorial 97 years after his death. It received near-universal praise. Its location near Wilde’s childhood home at 1 Merrion Square contributed to its popularity. In 2010 however the porcelain head needed replacing. Cracks appeared. A new head of white jadeite was crafted.

The Oscar Wilde Memorial Sculpture is more than a monument. It’s a vibrant conversation starter a playful homage to a life lived fully and dramatically. It invites us to consider the multifaceted nature of genius the duality of Wilde’s spirit. It embodies his wit his brilliance and his enduring legacy. It’s a treasure a must-see for anyone exploring the heart of Dublin.
