Osborn High School opened its doors in February 1957. The school was named after Laura Freele Osborn. She was the first female president of the Detroit Board of Education. Osborn was a suffragist and a school reform campaigner. She served on the school board for 38 years.
Initially, Osborn lacked essential facilities. There was no auditorium, gym, or pool. Vocational courses suffered from a lack of automotive equipment. It took four years for the Board of Education to fix this.
Osborn’s first student newspaper was called The Lance. Gregg T. Trendowski designed its masthead. The teams became the Knights, suggested by Gregg Trendowski. He also designed the team logos and the yearbook logo.
Osborn High School faced challenges. In 2006, it was criticized for lacking resources and student tension. The school was divided into three separate schools in 2009.
In 2010, there were plans to close Osborn. But it reopened that August. The Detroit Public Schools planned to keep it open for two years. In 2011, reports indicated that gangs caused problems at Osborn High. That same year, a wave of violence swirled around the school.
In 2012, Osborn was divided into four separate entities. These included Osborn College Preparatory Academy and Osborn MST. In 2017, the smaller schools merged back into one Osborn High School.
Osborn has faced its share of tragedies. From 1994 to 2013, five shooting incidents occurred on campus. These events underscore the challenges faced by the community.
Despite these hardships, Osborn persevered. In 2012, the school underwent a makeover. The remodeling used bright colors. New carpets and paint were installed to increase morale.
Osborn offers a variety of courses. These include engineering, finance, and Spanish. Students can participate in dual enrollment through WCCCD. There are also honors and AP classes.
Osborn boasts a diverse range of extracurriculars. Students can join the robotics team, media club, or book club. There is also student government, basketball, football, and more.
Mildred Gaddis of WCHB called Osborn the glue to the community. The school partners with many organizations. Skillman, United Way, and City-Year Corp are among them.
Osborn’s Hall of Fame recognizes athletic success. Kelsey Johnson won the long jump at the 1973 MHSAA finals. Jimalatrice Thomas won the 400-meter dash in 1988.
Several notable alumni attended Osborn. These include rapper Esham and basketball player Gary Plummer. Eminem also attended Osborn High School.
