Ever heard of a commander appointed at just twenty years old? That’s the story of Usama bin Zaid. We are standing in front of a place honoring him.
Osama bin Zaid was no ordinary person. He was a companion of Prophet Muhammad. Usama’s story is one of faith courage and the high regard in which the Prophet held him.
Usama’s lineage is noteworthy. His father Zayd bin Haritha was a freed slave of the Prophet. Zayd was among the first to embrace Islam. His mother Umm Ayman was also freed by the Prophet. This background gave Usama a unique position. He was known as the “beloved son of the beloved”.
Born around 613 CE Usama grew up during a crucial period in Islamic history. He migrated to Medina with his parents. Though young Usama longed to participate in major battles. Due to his age he was initially not allowed to partake in the Battle of Badr or the Battle of Uhud. He later participated in military expeditions. He proved his mettle in the sariyya of Bashir bin Sa’d to Fadak and the sariyya led by Ghalib bin Abd Allah al-Laythi. Usama did not abandon the Prophet in the strait of Hunayn.
A pivotal moment in Usama bin Zaid’s life came after the Farewell Pilgrimage. The Prophet appointed him commander of the Muslim army. Their mission was to confront the Romans in Balqa’ in Jordan. Usama was only twenty years old. This army included prominent companions like Abu Bakr and Umar b. al-Khattab. Some companions expressed discontent due to Usama’s youth. The Prophet rebuked them for their doubts.
The Prophet Muhammad showed great affection for Usama. Usama accompanied the Prophet into the Ka’ba during the conquest of Mecca.
After the Prophet’s death Abu Bakr dispatched Usama to carry out the assigned task. Usama launched an attack in the al-Balqa region of Syria. He achieved victory and returned to Medina. This victory brought joy to the people.
During the reign of Umar ibn al-Khattab Usama received a greater portion of the stipends. This was because of the Prophet’s affection for him.
Even during the caliphate of Imam Ali Usama’s actions were significant. He abstained from giving the oath of allegiance initially. Later Usama changed his view. Imam Ali accepted his excuse for not joining him in battle.
Usama’s life reflects dedication and a strong bond with the Prophet. He died around 671-2 CE. Imam al-Hasan shrouded Usama.
Usama bin Zaid’s legacy continues. He embodies devotion to faith courage in leadership and the Prophet’s boundless love. Remember Usama as a young commander. He stood tall in service to Islam. His story inspires generations.
