Ever heard of a music venue born from the ashes of a film factory? Welcome to the ORWOhaus. Right here in Berlin’s Marzahn-Hellersdorf district stands this remarkable building. Once home to ORWO a major East German film manufacturer the ORWOhaus now pulsates with a different kind of energy.

This isn’t your typical concert hall. The ORWOhaus is a self-managed rehearsal complex. It’s the largest of its kind in Europe. Imagine over 700 musicians and 200 bands making music 24/7. The building buzzes with creativity. It’s a testament to the power of community and perseverance.

The story began after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The ORWO factory fell silent. The building sat empty a ghost of its former industrial glory. Then in 1998 musicians discovered the perfect sanctuary. Isolated within an industrial zone the building offered soundproof rehearsal spaces. Word spread quickly. Soon hundreds of musicians were making the ORWOhaus their creative home.

But their idyllic existence was threatened. In 2004 the building was slated for closure due to fire safety violations. Facing eviction the musicians rallied. They protested. They occupied the building. They garnered support from the media and local politicians. Their fight for their beloved ORWOhaus captured the hearts of many.

Their efforts paid off. Through negotiations and funding from sources like the National Lottery they secured the ORWOhaus. They formed a non-profit association to manage the building. Repairs were made. The ORWOhaus was reborn.

A particularly memorable moment occurred in 2007. The musicians campaigned to rename their street. Street 13 became Frank-Zappa-Strasse. Why Zappa? The musicians admired his untamed creativity his musical versatility and his defiance of capitalist norms. The street renaming was celebrated with a huge all-night concert attended by over 2800 people.

Today the ORWOhaus is more than just rehearsal spaces. It offers studios event management services and even a band bureau to support young musicians. There’s a planned cafe with a rooftop terrace for musicians to connect. The ORWOhaus holds concerts workshops and an annual festival. It’s a vibrant hub a cultural gem in the heart of Berlin a reminder that even in the most unlikely places music can thrive. So take a moment appreciate this unique testament to Berlin’s enduring spirit. It is a story of creative perseverance and the transformative power of music.
