Was Ormeau always destined to be a town? The story begins much earlier than the buildings you see around you now. It starts with a sugar planter named Major Alexander Jenyns Boyd in the 1860s. He established the Ormeau Sugar Plantation here. He named it after a place close to his wife’s heart – Ormeau Road in Belfast, Ireland, where she was born. Ormeau, by the way, is French for “young elm”. The plantation thrived for a while but eventually succumbed to the relentless forces of nature – cane-rust and frost. Boyd moved on, becoming a prominent figure in Queensland’s education system. But Ormeau’s story didn’t end there. The land was purchased by William Doherty. He shifted focus, cultivating arrowroot and establishing a dairy. The land remained in the Doherty family for generations, a testament to Ormeau’s enduring appeal. Fast forward to the 1980s, and imagine a transformation! The rural landscape began to make way for a bustling suburb. The construction of the Brisbane to Gold Coast railway line in the 1990s further accelerated Ormeau’s growth, connecting it to the wider region. Today, Ormeau is a thriving blend of old and new. It holds onto its rural roots while embracing its suburban identity.
