Around 590 BC a Celtic tribe called the Insubres settled here. This area became known as Medhelanon. Milan’s history is long. The city has evolved from a Celtic settlement to a global metropolis. We’re here to explore some layers of its past. Milan’s story began around 400 BCE. The Insubres established Mediolanum. It meant “in the middle of the plain”. This strategic spot in the Po Valley was perfect for trade.

In 222 BCE, the Romans took over. Mediolanum became a Roman hub. Roads and aqueducts boosted Milan’s growth. By 286 CE, Milan was a political hotspot. Emperor Diocletian made it the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Palaces and baths sprung up.
