Did Mother Lula Phillips ever imagine her humble beginnings preaching under a tree in West Virginia would lead to the Original Glorious Church we stand before today? This church, right here in Philadelphia, represents a fascinating journey of faith, resilience, and a touch of divine inspiration. The Original Glorious Church of God in Christ’s story begins in 1915, with Mother Phillips’ arrival in West Virginia. Her powerful message resonated, leading to the establishment of several missions under the Triumph Church Kingdom of God in Christ. However, controversy arose within the Triumph Church after the death of their leader, Bishop E.D. Smith. The church’s doctrine stated believers would never die, shaking the faith of many after Smith’s passing. This led to a pivotal meeting in Charleston, West Virginia in 1921. The members sought to form a new church body. The question of a name arose, and many were suggested, but none felt right. Then, Julia Robinson, Mother Phillips’ daughter, asked Cleveland H. Stokes to share the name he’d received in a divine message. Stokes recounted his experience working in the coal mines, where the Lord spoke to him, saying, “I want a Glorious Church, and I’m going to have it.” The name “The Glorious Church of God in Christ” resonated with everyone present and was adopted unanimously. This marked the birth of the Original Glorious Church. Initially, the church focused solely on the baptism of the Holy Ghost. However, in 1922, they embraced water baptism in Jesus’ name as essential for salvation. The Original Glorious Church adapted and grew. After Mother Phillips’ passing, leadership transitioned. Elder Sidney C. Bass became the first consecrated Bishop in 1944. Years later, a significant church controversy led to a split, creating two independent organizations. Bishop Bass continued leading one branch until his death in 1977. The church has seen several leaders since its inception. Each leader has guided the Original Glorious Church, navigating challenges and continuing Mother Lula Phillips’ legacy. From a simple gathering under a tree to a thriving church in Philadelphia, the Original Glorious Church of God in Christ stands as a testament to unwavering faith and divine inspiration.
