Gazing out at the water, imagine Orient Heights Beach in East Boston. This isn’t just any beach. Orient Heights Beach offers a unique blend of relaxation and recreation.

Orient Heights is a vibrant neighborhood. It is tucked away in East Boston. The neighborhood wraps around the Belle Isle Inlet. This area serves as a gateway to the larger city.

Do you notice those planes? One of the beach’s most distinctive features is its view. It looks directly onto the runways of Logan International Airport. You can watch airplanes take off and land. They are only about 2000 feet away. This makes them both visible and audible.

The easternmost part of the beach is known as Shay’s Beach. Constitution Beach is a man-made crescent-shaped sandy beach. It was officially opened in 1952. However the name Shay’s Beach stuck with the locals.

This 223-acre area was artificially constructed. The work happened between 1949 and 1951. Over 34 acres of land were filled with dredged material and gravel. This created the beach you see today.

Notice how calm the water is. The beach is located in a protected inlet. Even though it’s part of the Atlantic Ocean, the water is placid.

Orient Heights is more than just a beach. It’s a neighborhood with a rich history. Narrow streets and Colonial and Victorian-era houses reflect this. Many homes still have intricate woodwork and spacious porches. Modern condominiums are also appearing. This is happening as redevelopment progresses.

Look around you. Orient Heights is undergoing dramatic revitalization. There is a strong public space framework here. It is also close to what will be the largest development project in Boston’s history. This is at the site of the old Suffolk Downs Horse Racing Track.

This redevelopment will create a new neighborhood. It will have an active mix of uses. These include retail, residential, office, lab, and hotel spaces. New open spaces, retail, and civic spaces will connect it all.

Orient Heights is becoming increasingly walkable. It is friendly for those who don’t want to rely on cars. The Orient Heights MBTA station on the Blue Line serves the area. Multiple buses take commuters to Downtown and other parts of Boston.

Feel the sense of community here. Orient Heights offers a unique coastal neighborhood experience. It is simultaneously a gateway to the urban city and a quieter area.

Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and progress. Orient Heights Beach is a place where you can relax, play, and connect with the city around you.
