Beneath this very address once resided a beacon. It is known as the Order of Saint Dominic Convent. The Order of Saint Dominic Convent stands as a testament to faith, service, and education. Let’s uncover the story of the Order of Saint Dominic Convent.

The Order of Preachers, also known as the Dominicans, was founded by Dominic de Guzman in 1216. Dominic aimed to spread the word of God through preaching, teaching, and example. The Order embraces ministries that bring God’s word to diverse societies. St. Dominic encouraged his followers to connect with each culture using its languages.

In 1526, the first Dominicans arrived on the Atlantic coast with Spanish colonists. They landed near present-day Georgetown, South Carolina. Among them was Antonio de Montesinos. He protested the conquerors’ oppression of native peoples. His protests were acclaimed as the first voice for liberty in the New World.

The continuing presence of Dominicans in the United States began in 1786. An Irish friar, John O’Connell, was assigned to New York. He served as chaplain at the Spanish legation.

In 1806, the Dominican Province of St. Joseph was established in Kentucky. In 1822, the first American Dominican Sisters were founded. They are known today as the Congregation of St. Catharine of Siena.

In 1853, the first Dominican women came from Europe. They were cloistered nuns from Bavaria, led by Josepha Witzlhofer. They settled in Williamsburg, New York to educate German Catholic immigrants. By 1900, the Brooklyn community had become congregations of active Third Order sisters.

The Dominican Friars have exercised Parish ministry in this area since 1867. They were joined by Dominican sisters in the 1880s. Since then, primary and secondary education have formed part of the ministry here. As the hospital complex emerged along York Avenue tending to the sick became the signature work of the Dominicans. Today, the Parish holds two Dominican churches. It also holds two Communities of Friars. Also two communities of Sisters, two high schools, and a hospital chaplaincy are part of the parish. It also contains an administrative center for the Order.

Dominican Academy has been educating young women since 1897. It is located on the Upper East Side. Dominican Academy consistently ranks among New York City’s best high schools. Operated by the Dominican Sisters of Peace and lay staff, it unites academic excellence and an all-honors curriculum with a family-like atmosphere.

The Dominican Sisters of Hope formed in 1995. Three Dominican groups joined from Fall River, MA; Newburgh, NY; and Ossining, NY.

The spirit of St. Dominic continues to inspire. The Order of Saint Dominic Convent is still fostering compassion and dedication. Their ministries evolved. Yet, their commitment to the Dominican mission never wavered. The Order of Saint Dominic Convent remains a testament to their enduring legacy.
