Do you know why the Oratorio di Sant’Antonio is considered one of Milan’s most beautiful churches?

Right before you stands a hidden treasure. The Oratorio di Sant’Antonio was built over 700 years ago. It was originally built by the Antonian order. They ran a hospital for patients infected by the “sacred fire.” At first the hospital was highly successful, but because of a rift with the nearby Basilica di San Nazaro, the hospital gradually declined. The church itself was renovated in 1584. It was then given to the Theatine priests. They made a major contribution to the city during a devastating plague as they cared for the sick, and this earned them the gratitude of the Milanese. So much so, that they received donations to decorate the church. The church is a stunning example of Baroque and Mannerist art in Milan. The walls and arches are richly decorated. The interior is a feast of stucco decorations and frescoes. It stands a testament to the work that went into designing and decorating the church. The stucco decorations are intricate and highly detailed. They are adorned with putti, festoons and angels. On the ceiling, you can see the frescoes painted by the Giovan Battista Carloni brothers portraying Stories of the Cross.

If you step inside, you will see an ornate bell tower dating back to the Gothic period. The Oratorio di Sant’Antonio is more than just a building. It is a story of charity, faith and dedication. The church is a powerful illustration of the history of Milan and a testament to the art of Renaissance architecture. It is a place where the past lives on. The church is a must-see, a hidden gem in the heart of Milan.
