Did this unassuming building on Via de’ Pandolfini always hold such artistic treasures? It’s hard to imagine from the street, but this is the Oratorio di San Niccolò del Ceppo. While the name might sound like a mouthful, it holds a story as captivating as the art inside. It all began in the 13th century with a simple act of charity. A group, known as the Company of San Niccolò del Ceppo, would collect offerings in a hollowed-out log, a “ceppo”. This humble beginning eventually led them to establish the Oratorio di San Niccolò del Ceppo in 1561. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by centuries of artistic passion. Look up! That’s Giovanni Domenico Ferretti’s masterpiece, “Life of St Niccolò”, gracing the ceiling. Painted in 1734, it tells the saint’s story in vibrant detail. Now, turn your attention to the main altar. You’ll see “Visitation” by Giovanni Antonio Sogliani, flanking a compelling fresco by Francesco Curradi. Interestingly, this wasn’t the original artwork in this prominent position. A piece by the renowned Fra Angelico, “Crucifixion with Saints Nicola and Francis”, once held court here in the 17th century. Today, you can still find this treasure, thankfully safe and sound, in the Oratorio di San Niccolò del Ceppo’s sacristy. The Oratorio di San Niccolò del Ceppo is a testament to the enduring power of faith, art, and the simple act of giving. As you go about your day, let the stories whispered within these walls linger. They serve as a beautiful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can blossom into something truly magnificent.
