Slipping through time’s veil, we find ourselves before the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista in Milan. This sacred space, once a vibrant hub of devotion, vanished in 1786. The Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista echoed with prayers as early as 1398. Documents from the parish of San Simpliciano, nestled within the bustling city of Milan, confirm its existence. Imagine Milan in the 14th century, a city dotted with 57 churches, oratories, and monasteries. Each dedicated to John the Baptist, a testament to his enduring influence. The Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista held a special place among them. Fast forward to 1501, and the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista reappears in historical records. These records offer a glimpse into its physical dimensions: approximately 16 meters long and 9 meters wide. Within its walls, the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista housed a treasure trove of relics. Many of these sacred objects arrived with monks relocating from a monastery outside Porta Comasina, adding another layer to the oratorio’s rich history. Sadly, the physical Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista is no more. Yet, its story, woven from historical threads, allows us to glimpse a vanished Milan, a city where faith and history intertwined within the walls of the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista.
