750 AD. That’s when the first version of the Oratorio di San Giorgio al Palazzo arose. It stood on the ruins of Diocletian’s imperial palace. Imagine Milan then the capital of the Western Roman Empire.

This isn’t just any church. The Oratorio di San Giorgio al Palazzo boasts a history as rich and layered as the city itself. Centuries of additions and renovations shaped its appearance. It’s a testament to Milan’s enduring spirit. A blend of architectural styles reflect Milan’s ever-changing landscape.

The twelfth century saw a grander church built on this site. The sixteenth century brought side chapels including the breathtaking Chapel of the Passion. Bernardino Luini’s 1516 paintings grace this chapel. They depict scenes from Christ’s Passion. A truly moving experience.

Francesco Maria Richini’s Baroque redesign in 1623 dramatically transformed the Oratorio di San Giorgio al Palazzo. Then Francesco Croce designed the current facade in 1774. Luigi Cagnola oversaw a complete interior restoration between 1800 and 1821. Finally in 1899 the neoclassical bell tower and dome were completed. Alfonso Parakeets designed them.

The Oratorio di San Giorgio al Palazzo also sheltered sacred relics of the Magi. They were brought here during the wars with Barbarossa from the Basilica of Sant’ Eustorgio. Can you picture the precious artifacts within these walls?

Beyond Luini’s masterpieces look for Romanesque capitals repurposed as holy water fonts. Admire the fourteenth-century reliefs. They depict Saint George and the Dragon and the Crucifixion. Marvel at canvases and frescoes by Montalto Duchino Crespi and Gaudenzio Ferrari.

The Oratorio di San Giorgio al Palazzo is a treasure. It stands as a silent witness to Milan’s vibrant past. It’s a place where history art and faith converge. A must-see for any visitor to Milan.
