In the heart of Milan, nestled near the Cimitero Monumentale, stands the Oratorio della Madonna di Lourdes. This grand basilica, a beacon of faith, holds a story of miraculous healing and unwavering devotion. The Oratorio della Madonna di Lourdes owes its existence to two brothers, Monsignor Antonio Videmari and Don Giuseppe. Don Giuseppe suffered from a throat tumor. His recovery was deemed miraculous, attributed to the Madonna di Lourdes. Filled with gratitude, the brothers embarked on a mission. They envisioned a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna. Their initial plan included a small grotto, reminiscent of the one at Lourdes, incorporated into the bell tower. However, the unstable ground necessitated separate structures. The Oratorio della Madonna di Lourdes began to take shape in 1897, designed by the architect Alfredo Campanini. Campanini, known for his Art Nouveau and eclectic style, crafted a three-aisled basilica, echoing the design of ancient churches. Adjacent to the church, a convalescent home was built to accommodate the faithful and the sick, a testament to the brothers’ dedication to healing and faith. The Oratorio della Madonna di Lourdes was initially a subsidiary of the Santissima Trinità parish. It gained independence in 1910 and was elevated to parish status in 1925 by Cardinal Eugenio Tosi. The external grotto, a focal point of the Oratorio della Madonna di Lourdes, was later adorned with a statue of Bernadette and a fountain, mirroring the grotto at Massabielle. The Oratorio della Madonna di Lourdes was consecrated in 1942 by Cardinal Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster. During World War II, the church suffered damage during bombings, but was subsequently restored. A grand cupola, adorned with frescoes, was added in 1957, further enhancing its beauty. The Oratorio della Madonna di Lourdes stands as a testament to the power of faith, a place where miracles are remembered and hope is renewed.
