Whispers of faith echo within the Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta. This sacred place, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, holds a captivating story. The Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the devotion of a community. Consecrated in 1935, its neo-Renaissance style, a nod to Bramante’s architectural genius, stands as a beacon of faith. The Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta’s central octagonal plan draws the eye upwards towards the dome, a symbol of heaven itself. Exposed brick, a hallmark of Lombard architecture, adds a touch of rustic charm. Inside the Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta, six side chapels and the presbytery surround the central space. Two central chapels, dedicated to the Sacred Heart and Mary, are larger. They are capped with their own domes and lanterns, adding to the architectural complexity. The Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta also houses a treasure trove of art and history. A neoclassical altar from the mid-19th century, originally from the old parish church, finds a new home in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Its relocation reflects the changes brought about by the Second Vatican Council. The main altar, a massive 12-ton block of yellow-roan marble, depicts scenes from Jesus’s life. Created in 1973 by Gino Casanova, it’s a powerful symbol of faith. Other artistic gems include an 18th-century altarpiece by Biagio Bellotti, representing Bernardino of Siena, and an 1850 organ built by the Portinari family. The Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta also boasts bronze panels depicting the Via Crucis, marble mosaic floors, and a baptistery decorated in the style of Fra Angelico. A mosaic in the apse, composed of 700,000 pieces, portrays Jesus, Mary, and eleven saints during the apocalypse. The entrance door, crafted in 1981, is adorned with bronze panels depicting scenes from Mary’s life. Inside, copper panels showcase biblical scenes. Stained-glass windows in the dome and chapels add a splash of color and light. Mosaics above the side chapels and main entrance, created between 1985 and 1987, depict various biblical events. Finally, the main dome itself features scenes from the apocalypse, painted between 1999 and 2000. The Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta is more than just a church. It’s a living canvas of art, history, and faith, waiting to be explored.
