The shimmering waters of Orankesee beckon. Feel the sun’s warmth on your skin. Imagine the laughter of children echoing across the sandy beach. This is Orankesee a beautiful swimming lake nestled in the northeastern part of Berlin. It’s more than just a pretty face though. Its history is rich and fascinating.
Orankesee wasn’t always the recreational haven it is today. First mentioned in a 14th-century document the area around the lake remained undeveloped until the late 19th century. A villa colony sprang up in 1892. Then in 1913 a decision was made to create a public park surrounding the lake. A nearby ice factory supplied local businesses with natural ice. In 1926 the factory and lake were sold to the city of Berlin. The area underwent a transformation with the creation of a 1.3 km long waterfront path.
A significant turning point came in 1929. Wilhelm Heiden-Heinrich a theater director built a Strandbad a public lido on the lake’s shores. Legend has it the sand for the 300-meter beach came from the Baltic Sea. The reality is a bit less romantic. It was actually construction waste from the Alexanderplatz. Heiden-Heinrich’s Strandbad opened to massive crowds. On its first Sunday 12000 visitors flocked to enjoy the new facilities. The lake’s terraces with a beer cellar large and small halls and outdoor terraces could hold 5000 people. They hosted concerts and dances.
Sadly World War II brought devastation. Bombings destroyed the Strandbad in 1944. The area became a restricted zone after the war. It housed Soviet commanders and later members of the Stasi. The remnants of the old buildings remained until 1957. After the removal of security fences the Strandbad and the remaining buildings were renovated and reopened.
Even today Orankesee continues to evolve. A local association works to maintain the water quality. Plans for new development around the lake were once proposed but faced hurdles. The ongoing goal remains to balance development with preservation of the lake’s natural beauty and recreational value. Orankesee remains a treasured part of Berlin’s history and a vibrant community space. Today it offers a water slide playgrounds and beach volleyball. It continues to provide respite and recreation for Berliners and tourists alike. The lake’s history echoes in its waters. It continues to be a place where people make memories.
