Documents about this ancient settlement and its people are scarce. They hint at a small village, perhaps even a fortified Iron Age town, an oppidum. Several Calderwood landholdings existed in this area. The people living on these lands would have been known by the name Calderwood, rather than by association with any specific fortification at the Dee of Calder. This challenges the common belief that the Calderwood name originated from the later castle. The Oppidum of Calderwood likely predates any significant structure at the Dee of Calder, representing an earlier chapter in this location’s rich history. This isn’t just speculation.
