Have you ever felt the cool water on your skin after a long summer’s day? The Opfinger See offers just that. This isn’t just any lake. The Opfinger See is a local treasure. It’s a place where history and leisure meet.

The Opfinger See wasn’t always a haven for swimming and relaxation. It started its life as a gravel pit. Road construction needed gravel and plenty of it was found here. The digging began almost 60 years ago during the construction of the A5 motorway. The result two separate bodies of water. In 1959 the northern part was created. In 1968 the southern part joined. In 1978 they were connected to form the Opfinger See. After many changes particularly to the western shore the Opfinger See now covers 44 hectares.

The Opfinger See’s transformation didn’t stop at becoming a lake. The city council recognized its value. In 1997 a plan was put into action. This ensured both recreation and the protection of the lake’s ecosystem. Uferbereiche were reshaped. A biotope protection zone was established in the north. Here paths were removed. Lying areas were reduced. A viewing platform was built.

At the south end new lying areas appeared. A DLRG lifeguard service was introduced. Toilets were installed. A temporary kiosk opened. An underwater dam was created. This dam is clever. It separates the water into distinct zones improving water quality.

In 2013 the last cubic meter of gravel was removed. The southern part of the Opfinger See was further developed. Facilities were removed. The landscape was restored. Oak trees were planted. A new meadow with barbecue areas appeared. There’s a beach volleyball court too. Slacklines are strung. The forest created a family-friendly swimming area.

The northern third proved controversial. The biotope protection zone was a point of contention. The angling club had concerns. A study was ordered in 2014. This study revealed 83 bird species. 38 were breeding birds including kingfishers. Winter visitors included 23 waterfowl species.

The impact of boat traffic was examined. Birds reacted to boats. However the impact was deemed low. The study concluded a 100-meter buffer zone was needed.

Today the Opfinger See thrives. It’s a popular spot. It is a haven for nature and people. A testament to the successful balance of recreation and environmental protection. Remember to respect the designated areas. The Opfinger See is waiting to make lasting memories for you.
