Have you ever been so hot you could fry an egg on the pavement? Here in Houston, it’s not uncommon, especially during summer. But in Buffalo Bayou Park, there’s a cool oasis waiting for you. It’s called the Open Channel Flow sculpture, and it’s a unique work of art that blends function with form. You’re standing right in front of it now. The sculpture, designed by the artist Matthew Geller, looks like a giant, futuristic water tower. It’s built from painted steel, stainless steel, and water, and it’s a little bit whimsical, a little bit ironic. See the hand pump? Originally, you could actually pump it to send a refreshing shower of water down from a spout 25 feet above. Imagine the feeling of that cool water on a hot day. But don’t worry, if it isn’t working, we’ll just have to imagine the feeling. But the fact that it’s not working doesn’t detract from the piece’s charm. It’s still a fascinating piece of public art that reflects Houston’s history and ingenuity.
