Could Opa-locka Executive Airport be considered the birthplace of aviation in Miami? Standing here, you might be surprised to learn that this airport predates Miami International Airport! Opa-locka Executive Airport’s story begins in 1927, thanks to the vision of aviation pioneer, Glenn Curtiss. Curtiss, after a successful career in aircraft manufacturing, turned his attention to real estate in Florida.

He founded the city of Opa-locka and established the Florida Aviation Camp, which would later evolve into the Opa-locka Executive Airport. The airport witnessed many historical milestones. In 1929, the City of Miami built a hangar here to house the Goodyear Blimp. A few years later, the airport even hosted the famous Graf Zeppelin on its transatlantic route.

During World War II, Opa-locka Executive Airport, then known as Naval Air Station Miami, became a bustling hub for the U.S. Navy. It housed a naval air gunnery school, a Marine Corps Air Station, a Coast Guard Station, and even a small craft training center. The airport’s strategic importance continued during the Cold War. It played a role in covert operations, including the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In fact, the transfer of the airport to Miami-Dade County was delayed due to its involvement in these historical events. Can you imagine the secrets these runways and hangars hold? Today, Opa-locka Executive Airport might not be as busy as Miami International. But it remains a vital part of Miami’s aviation landscape. It’s a testament to the pioneering spirit of Glenn Curtiss and a silent witness to some of the most significant events of the 20th century. As you explore Miami, remember that this airport holds a unique place in the city’s history, a place where aviation dreams took flight and history unfolded.
