Oknyeobong Peak whispers tales of stunning vistas and hidden trails. Here in Aju-dong, this peak isn’t just a geographical landmark. It’s a local treasure, a canvas painted with the hues of nature and history. Ongnyeobong offers breathtaking views. You can see the Aju-dong neighborhood sprawled below, the DSME shipyard humming with activity, and the distant Jisepo peninsula. Begin your trek behind the Aju Community Center. The trailhead starts with a dirt road. It leads into the embracing quiet of the forest. Two paths beckon you upwards. A steep climb awaits those who turn left. It’s a true test of quads and knees. A gentler, clearer path lies to the right. This path winds past Geoje Middle and High Schools. I highly recommend this route for a more comfortable ascent. Shortly after, you’ll encounter a crossroads with exercise equipment. Turn left to begin your climb. The trail is steep, but well-marked. It’s a climb where focusing on the path ahead is key. About two thirds of the way up, you’ll cross a dirt utility road. The trail continues directly across from here, ascending via a flight of stairs. The final third of the climb leads to a clearing on the ridge. From the clearing, the peak is to your left. But wait! An off-shoot bonus trail beckons. Turn right at the clearing, before or after visiting the peak. A short, ten-minute walk leads you to a wooden gazebo. Here you’ll find stunning views of Jisepo and the sea. It’s a tranquil spot, often empty, and rivals even the summit views. After enjoying this hidden gem, return to the clearing. From here, the peak is another 0.68km away. Cellular and powerline towers mark your approach to the summit. Here, another off-shoot trail awaits. A sign points towards Sodong Village. Follow this short detour to discover a collection of beautiful, yet precarious rocks. Exercise extreme caution here, especially with children. Once you’ve marvelled at the rocks, return to the signpost. The peak is just minutes away! Enjoy the panoramic views from Ongnyeobong’s summit. Aju-dong, DSME, and Okpo lie to the north. Jisepo unfolds to the south. Returning, you can retrace your steps or explore another trail. Near the peak buildings, a trail on the right descends the mountain. This unmarked path leads to a wooden platform, ideal for a stealthy camping spot. Just beyond the platform, more picturesque rocks await. These hidden gems add another layer of beauty to your Oknyeobong experience.
