Gazing up at One Trinity Centre, did you ever imagine a 70-ton vault sailing down the Hudson? One Trinity Centre isn’t just a skyscraper. It’s a testament to ambition and ingenuity. Completed in 1907, this gothic marvel in Manhattan’s Financial District boasts a rich history. Originally known as the Trinity and U.S. Realty Buildings, One Trinity Centre comprises two 22-story structures. These twin towers, designed by Francis H. Kimball, stand as proud landmarks. They showcase intricate limestone ornamentation and an array of fascinating gargoyles. Now, picture this: 1904. A colossal 70-ton bank vault, commissioned for the building, is constructed in Hudson, NY. Then, it’s loaded onto a barge and begins its journey down the Hudson River. Upon reaching Lower Manhattan, the vault is placed on specially built railroad tracks. These tracks were designed to transport the massive vault up the hill from the riverbank to its final resting place on Broadway. Remarkably, the vault still sits on these tracks today. In fact, the entire structure of One Trinity Centre was built around this impressive vault. The building rose to a height of 308 feet upon completion. The two towers are separated by Thames Street and connected by a steel footbridge. In 2006, the historic vault was beautifully restored and repurposed. It became Trinity Place, a bar and restaurant, allowing the public to experience this unique piece of history firsthand. One Trinity Centre has witnessed the transformation of the Financial District. From a hub of Wall Street transactions to a vibrant residential and retail center, the area has evolved. One Trinity Centre remains a steadfast presence, its gothic architecture standing in elegant contrast to the modern cityscape. The Centre underwent renovations to restore its facade and update its interior. The renovations also included the illumination of Thames Street. The aim was to create a welcoming environment for pedestrian activity and enhance the street-level dining and retail experience. So, the next time you pass One Trinity Centre, remember the journey of the 70-ton vault. Recall the vision of its architect, Francis H. Kimball, and appreciate the ongoing story of this remarkable landmark.
