Jim David, son of songwriter Hal David, founded One On One Recording. It began as a massive one-room facility. The studio quickly gained a reputation. It became known for its excellent drum sound.

Many iconic artists have recorded here. Metallica recorded both “…And Justice For All” and “The Black Album” here. “The Black Album” was certified 16x platinum. It also provided the backdrop for the band’s promo photos. A making-of documentary and the “Nothing Else Matters” video were filmed here too.

Other notable albums recorded at One On One Recording include Alice in Chains’ “Dirt”. Kiss created “Crazy Nights” and “Psycho Circus” here. Dream Theater recorded “Awake” here. Megadeth mixed “Rust in Peace” here.

In 1993, Yoshiki Hayashi of X Japan bought the studio. He was frustrated by the long wait times. He renamed it Extasy Recording Studio. The studio became his private facility.

In 1998, Yoshiki purchased Brooklyn Recording Studios. It was renamed One On One South Recording Studios. The original became One On One North Recording Studios. The South studio closed in 2003.

In 2012, the studio changed hands again. It was rebranded as 17 Hertz Studio. In 2023, One On One Recording reopened. It returned to its original business model. It once again became a commercial recording studio.

Many famous musicians have worked here. These include Etta James, Cher and Eddie Van Halen. Mötley Crüe, Poison and Donna Summer also recorded here. Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart and Ozzy Osbourne all have ties to this studio. Alice in Chains, Aretha Franklin and Bruce Springsteen have also graced its halls.
