Located on East 100th Street in Brooklyn’s Carnarsie neighborhood One Hundred Percent Playground got its name from its address. This isn’t just any playground. It’s a piece of New York City history. One Hundred Percent Playground opened in 1965. It was a jointly operated facility shared by P.S 242 and community residents. Before becoming a playground the area was designated nine years prior.

The story of One Hundred Percent Playground is woven into the broader tapestry of New York City’s playground history. Think back to the turn of the 20th century. Reformers fought for spaces where children could play. They believed play was crucial for their development and moral well-being. The first municipal playground in the US opened in 1903. This marked a turning point. It demonstrated the importance of play spaces.

The 1930s saw an incredible expansion of playgrounds thanks to the Works Progress Administration. This federal program boosted the number of playgrounds dramatically. Robert Moses the Parks Commissioner played a key role. His leadership resulted in the construction of hundreds of new playgrounds. These new playgrounds featured iconic elements. They had sandboxes see-saws jungle gyms and swings. They were designed to accommodate kids of all ages. One Hundred Percent Playground reflects this legacy.

One Hundred Percent Playground itself underwent a major renovation in 1998 and 1999. New fencing was installed. Colorful play equipment was added. Tot swings and a spray shower were included for added fun. The basketball and handball courts were also improved. Benches were also added for those seeking a more relaxed experience.

Today One Hundred Percent Playground stands as a testament to this legacy. It’s a place where children can play and enjoy the outdoors. It’s also a reminder of the long history behind New York City’s parks and playgrounds. This is a legacy of vision and commitment to the well-being of children. Every swing every slide every joyful squeal holds a piece of this rich history. So take a moment to appreciate the enduring spirit of One Hundred Percent Playground. It is more than just a place to play.
