Was this building always destined for greatness? That’s a question you might ask yourself standing here, gazing up at One Georgia Center. This prominent skyscraper, once known as the Life of Georgia Building, has been a fixture of the Atlanta skyline since 1968. One Georgia Center proudly stands at the junction of West Peachtree Street and North Avenue. Its gleaming Georgia marble exterior is a testament to the state’s rich resources and the building’s enduring elegance. Originally intended to reach 29 stories, One Georgia Center was ultimately capped at 24 stories. Despite this change, its construction represented a significant investment at the time, costing $13.5 million. The building served as the headquarters for the Life of Georgia Insurance Company, its namesake emblazoned on a prominent sign that once crowned its peak. When the company relocated in 1985, the sign disappeared, but the building’s legacy continued. One Georgia Center made history as one of the first skyscrapers to rise outside of downtown Atlanta. This bold move sparked a wave of development in midtown, helping shape the Atlanta skyline we know today. Over the years, One Georgia Center has housed various prestigious tenants, including the Georgia Department of Transportation, which moved its headquarters here in 2008. Each tenant has added to the building’s rich tapestry of stories, solidifying its place as a symbol of Atlanta’s growth and ambition.
