Imagine a hidden gem nestled in the northern San Fernando Valley. That’s O’Melveny Park. This park offers a refreshing escape from city life.

O’Melveny Park is the second largest park in Los Angeles. Only Griffith Park is bigger. It spans a vast 672 acres in the Santa Susana Mountains.

The park’s story begins with Henry W. O’Melveny. He was a founder of the prestigious law firm O’Melveny & Myers. The firm represented many early Los Angeles families. Henry was also an original member of the California State Parks Commission in 1927.

His son, John O’Melveny, purchased the land in 1941. Initially, it was named C. J. Ranch. The ranch was a working landscape. It grew citrus fruits. Cattle grazed here and the O’Melvenys also raised bulldogs.

In the early 1970s, John O’Melveny made arrangements to turn the land into a park. His wife Corinne’s estate sold her half to the city below market value. John then donated his half. In 1976, the land was officially deeded to the city for a park.

O’Melveny Park officially opened in 1973. The city invested in improvements. Irrigation systems and bathrooms were added. Picnic tables were installed along with a wooden fence.

Commemorative plaques honor the O’Melveny family. They stand near the caretaker’s house and a picnic area. The Granada Hills North Neighborhood Council supported this recognition.

O’Melveny Park is known for its extensive trails. These trails are perfect for hiking and horseback riding. They lead to stunning views. Near the entrance, you’ll find a grove of citrus trees. Almost all of them are grapefruit trees.

A caretaker lives on-site. This ensures the park is well-maintained.

In 2025, the Archer Fire affected the park. It started on January 10 and quickly spread. Firefighters and water-dropping helicopters contained the blaze. The fire was halted at 19 acres. No structures were damaged.

Today O’Melveny Park offers a peaceful retreat. It provides large grassy areas and picnic spots. Many visitors come to enjoy the quiet majesty of O’Melveny Park.
