Can you feel the weight of history pressing down on you? You are standing before the Umariya Elementary School. This is no ordinary school. It is a place where layers of Jerusalem’s past intertwine.

The Umariya School is a madrassa. It sits in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City. Its location is significant. The school marks the start of the Via Dolorosa. This is believed to be the First Station of the Cross. Christian tradition says Pontius Pilate judged Jesus here. Or perhaps a duplicate of Hz. Isa.

The Umariya School is named after Umar Ibn El-Khattab. He was the second caliph. He conquered Jerusalem in the 7th century. The school was established much later in 1924.

Look closely at the ground beneath the Umariya School. There are remnants of the Antonia Fortress. Herod the Great built this fortress in 35 AD. The school was purportedly built on its ruins. Imagine Roman soldiers marching here. Think of the drama that unfolded within those walls.

The Jerusalem Foundation has supported renovations at the Umariya School. They renovated the auditorium in 1972. It served as a venue for school and community events. They also supported renovations to the school library. It opened as a public library branch in 1968. The courtyard was renovated in 1992. A central heating system was installed. This was the school’s first.

The Umariya School has faced challenges. In 1996, an exit from the Western Wall Tunnel was opened. It emerged on the Via Dolorosa under the school’s entrance stairs. This was ordered by then Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Some Arabs saw this as a land grab. Riots erupted, and tragically, 80 people were killed.

Today, the Umariya School continues to function. It serves many boys each year. They study in grades kindergarten through six. The school is located on the north-western corner of al-Haram al-Sharif. It stands adjacent to the Convent of the Sisters of Zion. Al-Mu’dathiyya, al-Jawiliyya and a-Ṣabibiyya Madrasas are to its south.

As you stand here, consider the Umariya School. It is more than just a school. It is a symbol of Jerusalem’s complex history. It is a place of learning, a site of conflict, and a reminder of the city’s layered past. Its walls whisper tales of conquerors and caliphs. They echo with the voices of students and the footsteps of pilgrims. The Umariya School stands as a testament to Jerusalem’s enduring spirit.
