The Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys has a fascinating past. It was originally built for the 1929 International Exposition. The stadium hoped to host the 1936 Summer Olympics. But Berlin won that bid.
Designed by Pere Domènech i Roura, the stadium officially opened on May 20 1929. The opening included Spain’s first official rugby international game. Spain played against Italy. A friendly football match also took place. The Catalan national team played Bolton Wanderers. The Catalan team won 4–0.
The stadium was intended to host the People’s Olympiad in 1936. This was a protest against the Berlin Olympics. Sadly the Spanish Civil War broke out. The event was canceled.
In the fifties the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys hosted the 1955 Mediterranean Games. In 1957 it hosted a national football cup final. Barcelona played against Espanyol.
The stadium fell into disuse in the seventies. The stands deteriorated. But Barcelona bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics. The stadium was renovated with help from Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti. The original facades were kept. New grandstands were built. The Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys reopened in 1989 for the World Cup in Athletics.
In 1992 the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. It also hosted all the athletic competitions of the Olympic Games and Paralympics.
From 1997 to 2009, Espanyol called the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys home. The Barcelona Dragons American football team also played here. They played from 1991 to 2002. The stadium hosted NFL’s American Bowl in 1993 and 1994.
In 2001, the stadium was renamed. It was named after Lluís Companys. He was the former president of Catalonia. The Franco regime executed him at Montjuïc Castle in 1940. The Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys hosted the 2010 European Athletics Championships.
Since the 2023–24 season, FC Barcelona has been playing its home games at the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys. This is due to renovations at Camp Nou. The club plans to stay here until the 2025–26 season.
Many famous musicians have played here. Mecano, The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen have all performed at the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys.
