Seventy years. That’s how long Olivet Presbyterian Church has stood proudly on Myrtle Avenue. But its story stretches far beyond that. Olivet’s roots lie in the early 20th century. A young divinity student Joseph DeRogatis answered a call. He began ministering to Italian immigrants in West New Brighton. His work with his wife Emma blossomed. By 1917 they built Calvary Chapel. It quickly became a community center a beacon of hope for many.

Calvary Chapel wasn’t just a place of worship. It offered a unique Daily Vacation Bible School. It was the first of its kind on Staten Island attracting both Protestant and Catholic children. The church expanded. A Christian Education Wing was added during the 1930s thanks to a WPA project. This shows the church’s adaptation to community needs even amidst economic hardship.

The growth continued. By the late 1930s Calvary Chapel sought independence. After overcoming initial resistance the church became Olivet Presbyterian Church in 1946. It started with 235 members. Dr DeRogatis served for 45 years leaving a profound legacy. His influence is still felt today in families and pastors across the country. His dedication shaped Olivet’s multicultural identity.

A new chapter began in the late 1960s. The congregation under Pastor Winfield Hall built the current church building. The land cost a mere $19000 at a tax auction in 1956. The new building was finished in 1970. Rev C Lee MacCallum became the pastor in 1972. Under his leadership racial and ethnic diversity flourished. The church’s mission expanded. A strong music ministry with choirs and soloists thrived. The church school flourished with active children. Youth groups adult education and the oldest continuing Vacation Bible School on Staten Island all thrived. This vibrant atmosphere truly reflected Olivet’s commitment to its community.

Today Olivet continues its outreach. It runs a homeless shelter for women. It partners with Project Hospitality providing meals for those living with HIV AIDS. It actively participates in community events. Olivet shows incredible commitment to mission work both locally and globally. The church embodies a rich history and a vibrant present continuing its legacy of compassion and service. This is Olivet Presbyterian Church a testament to faith community and enduring service.
