Did tragedy strike Olivet Baptist Church not once, but twice? The Olivet Missionary Baptist Church here in Houston has seen its share of hardship. It has risen from ashes, not once, but twice. The church burned in 1983, a devastating blow to the congregation. It was rebuilt under the steadfast leadership of Reverend Nathaniel T. Burks, Sr. He oversaw the reconstruction, ensuring the church could continue its mission. This wasn’t the first time Olivet Baptist Church faced rebuilding. The original structure was torn down and replaced in 1938 under Pastor Branch. He used Malachi 3:8-10, “God’s Financial Plan,” to guide the fundraising and construction efforts, leading to significant growth in membership. Reverend Burks served Olivet Baptist Church for an impressive 43 years, from 1945 to 1988. During his tenure, the church even changed addresses, though it remained on the same property. The original building facing Jamison Street was reoriented to face Lyons Avenue, marking a new chapter in the church’s history. Olivet Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of the community. It has hosted prominent events such as meetings of the National Board and State Board. It also housed the State Congress and the National Baptist Sunday School and B.T.U. Congress. Reverend Burks’ influence extended beyond the church walls. He served as a lecturer in the National Congress for 25 years, Corresponding Secretary of the State Congress, and Parliamentarian of the Missionary General Congress of Texas. Olivet Baptist Church has seen a succession of pastors. Each has left their unique mark on the church. From Pastor Branch’s financial acumen to Reverend Burks’ long and devoted service, and beyond, each leader has shaped the church into what it is today. The church has faced trials and tribulations. Yet, its spirit remains unbroken, a testament to the resilience of its congregation and their unwavering faith.
