What if these walls could talk? Today we explore Oliver Castle, a colonial mansion with a story etched in its very foundation.

Oliver Castle stands as a testament to Colombo’s rich history. It highlights the urgent need to preserve heritage in the city. This beautiful two-storey mansion is located on Gregory’s Road. It is believed to have been built in the 1800s. The castle once belonged to Henry Joseph Peiris. He was a general merchant and arrack renter who owned some of the largest arrack farms on the island.

In 1971, the Canadian government purchased Oliver Castle. Later, it became the Canadian High Commission. In 1998, then High Commissioner Konrad G. Sigurdson unveiled a plaque. This commemorated the restoration of the house’s name to Oliver Castle. The event was attended by descendants of the original owner. Lakshman Jayakody, the then Cultural Affairs Minister, and Karu Jayasuriya, the then Colombo Mayor, were also in attendance.

The Sunday Times described the building’s fretwork filigree of wood. It also mentioned the painstakingly turned balusters with leaves of carved wood. The article stated that Oliver Castle survived due to its sturdy construction. Care was also lavished on it after it was leased as the Canadian High Commission in the 1950s.

In 2010, there were concerns that the Canadian High Commission might demolish Oliver Castle. This sparked debate about preserving Colombo’s colonial houses. Parliament had passed legislation to ensure their preservation. The exteriors and roofs should remain intact, even if interiors were modernized.

Archaeologists argued that any building over 100 years old was a potential monument for protection. They felt gazetting was a formality. Some officials argued that the property belonged to Canada. However, others pointed out that diplomatic missions must comply with the host state’s laws. The International Council on Monuments and Sites ICOMOS was informed. They were asked to appeal to the Canadian government against the demolition of Oliver Castle.

In 2011, the Canadian High Commission held a wall-breaking ceremony. High Commissioner Bruce Levy assured that the facade would remain. The front portion, including the intricately carved staircase, would also be preserved. The more recent visa section and the rear of the building would be demolished. The concept design for the new building combined the old and the new. The heritage aspects of the original Oliver Castle were maintained and enhanced.

Oliver Castle continues to stand, its facade a link to the past. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving historical buildings. These buildings contribute to the unique character of Colombo. The castle is a symbol of cultural heritage. It reflects the ongoing efforts to balance progress and preservation. The story of Oliver Castle is a testament to the enduring legacy of Colombo’s colonial past.
