Founded in 1958 Olive Hill Bethany Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It began modestly in the home of Sis Vernice Moore. Rev Rocellia Johnson led the first service. A mere $21.50 comprised their first offering. This small group of dedicated believers laid the foundation for a vibrant church community.

From house to house they worshipped. They held steadfast to their weekly Bible studies. In September 1958 they found their first permanent home. They called it “Little Bethany”. It stood at the corner of 5th Avenue and 15th Street in Los Angeles. This marked a significant step in the church’s growth.

In 1970 Pastor Johnson unveiled a new vision. The church relocated to 4300 W Santa Barbara Avenue. That’s where it remains today at the corner of Hillcrest and MLK Blvd. The move was part of his expanding vision. It showcased the church’s evolving needs and ambitious plans.

A key figure was Sis Dorothy Johnson. She established the music department in 1958. For over 50 years she shared her musical talents. She was also a powerful prayer warrior. Her contributions were instrumental in shaping the church’s spiritual identity.

The church wasn’t without its trials. The Northridge Earthquake in 1994 destroyed their facility. They affectionately called it “Big Bethany”. They were forced to worship in various locations for 13 years. Dorsey High School and Audubon Middle School became temporary sanctuaries. This period tested their resilience and faith. They emerged stronger.

Olive Hill Bethany Baptist Church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a story of perseverance. It’s a testament to unwavering faith. It’s a legacy of community and service. It is a place where the spirit of God is felt powerfully. It’s a living history. A history of growth. A history of resilience. A history of faith. The church continues to thrive a beacon of hope in Los Angeles.
