Founded in 1863 by Reverend A. Peterson Olive Branch Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. This isn’t just a building it’s a living history. Imagine the struggles of its founders former slaves seeking solace and spiritual guidance after emancipation. They began their worship under a bush arbor a humble start for a church that would endure.
The church has seen many pastors. Reverend Benjamin J Julian served for an impressive 44 years ordaining Reverend Samuel J Ellison Sr who then took the reins. Under Reverend Ellison’s leadership the cornerstone of the original church was laid in 1952. The congregation’s vision led to the demolition of that building in 1957. Services were temporarily held at St Mark B C while a new church was constructed. Finally on December 13 1959 the congregation returned to their newly built temple at 3222 DeArmas Street.
The story of Olive Branch Baptist Church is one of overcoming obstacles. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 dealt a devastating blow. The church building suffered major damage. Yet the spirit of the church remained unbroken. Services continued in the undamaged old building. On Resurrection Sunday April 16 2006 the congregation triumphantly returned to their rebuilt edifice.
This resilience is reflected in the church’s continued growth and community involvement. Under Reverend Reginald Nicholas Sr’s leadership the church expanded its outreach programs. They organized the first MLK community march and rally. They worked closely with local and state officials advocating for community needs. In 1998 Olive Branch became a founding member of the Cornerstone Missionary Baptist General Association. In 2000 the church dedicated its new edifice at 1134 Odeon Avenue. And in a remarkable act of community engagement the church successfully petitioned to have Odeon Avenue renamed Branch Joseph Avenue.
