The Mighty Wurlitzer’s roar echoes through time. Old Town Music Hall stands before you a testament to classic cinema and live performance. Built in 1921 it started life as the El Segundo State Theater.
In the 1960s two musicians Bill Coffman and Bill Field had a dream. They purchased the magnificent Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. This incredible instrument boasts over 2600 pipes four keyboards and 260 switches. They installed it in the El Segundo State Theater. This marked the birth of Old Town Music Hall in 1968.
The ‘Two Bills’ as they were known opened their doors to the public. They offered classic films accompanied by the majestic sounds of the Wurlitzer. Ragtime jazz and pipe organ concerts also filled the hall with music. The organ itself is powered by a 10-horsepower Spencer Turbine Orgoblo. This powerful engine brings the massive pipe organ to life.
Imagine the thrill of watching a silent film. The Wurlitzer’s music swells and dips mirroring the on-screen action. It’s a unique experience transporting audiences back to the golden age of cinema. This is what Old Town Music Hall offers. The hall also features a stunning 9-foot Bösendorfer concert grand piano. Handcrafted in Vienna in 1974 it’s a masterpiece.
Sadly Bill Coffman passed away in 2001. Bill Field continued the legacy of Old Town Music Hall. He worked tirelessly to maintain the hall’s unique charm. He attracted a new generation of fans of classic film and music. Unfortunately Bill Field also passed away in 2020. The hall was closed for a while due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It thankfully reopened in the summer of 2021.
