Did the Old Town Hall’s tower always watch over Regensburg? No. The Old Town Hall, a striking landmark in Regensburg, began its life much closer to the ground. Its oldest section, the imposing 55-meter tower, wasn’t part of the original plan. When Regensburg gained the prestigious title of Free Imperial City in 1245, the city needed a place for its newfound council and mayor. The tower wasn’t added until later. The high tower now visible wasn’t part of the initial 13th-century construction near the old Roman fort. It was added around the 1320s or 1330s, along with the Reichssaal building which housed the Reich Hall, originally meant for celebrations and dancing. The Old Town Hall’s importance truly blossomed in 1663. The Perpetual Diet chose Regensburg as its permanent meeting place, holding sessions in the Old Town Hall for almost 150 years. This period marked the Old Town Hall’s golden age. It became the heart of Regensburg, but also held significance on a much larger scale. The Reichstag Hall within its walls is seen as a predecessor to modern German parliaments, the European Union, and even the United Nations. Think about that. For a century and a half, decisions made within this building shaped the course of Europe, perhaps even the world. This wasn’t just a place for political meetings. It hosted lavish festivals and celebrations. One such event led to a legendary love story between an emperor and a local woman, a tale that’s become part of European folklore. The couple’s son, Don Juan de Austria, later became famous and is immortalized in a statue near Zieroldsplatz, just a short walk from the Old Town Hall. The Old Town Hall also holds a darker history. Beneath the grandeur of the Imperial Hall lies the “Fragstatt,” a chilling reminder of medieval justice. Here, torture instruments remain, preserved in their original state. Guided tours offer a glimpse into this somber chapter of the past. The late Gothic pointed arch portal tells yet another story. It features the city keys and two armed figures known as Schutz und Trutz, embodying Regensburg’s strength and defiance. They became a symbol of the city.
