Ever wondered what it’s like to step into a time capsule? Then welcome to the Old Town Bar. Right here on 45 East 18th Street this legendary establishment whispers stories of bygone eras.

The Old Town Bar isn’t just a bar it’s a living piece of New York City history. Since 1892 it has witnessed the city’s transformation. It first opened its doors as Viemeisters a German restaurant in a neighborhood brimming with German heritage.

The Old Town Bar’s journey is fascinating. During Prohibition it cleverly reinvented itself as Craig’s Restaurant a speakeasy. Hollowed-out booths hid bottles of alcohol. Smart owners ensured they were tipped off before police raids. After Prohibition’s end the Lohden family purchased it. They renamed it the Old Town Bar and erected its iconic neon sign in 1937.

The bar’s charm lies in its remarkably preserved original fixtures. The 55-foot marble and mahogany bar is a sight to behold. The pressed steel ceiling soars to an impressive 16 feet. Large beveled mirrors antique cash registers and wooden booths add to the ambiance. Even the food arrives via New York’s oldest dumbwaiter a quirky elevator that ferries orders from the upstairs kitchen.

For men there’s a unique treat. The men’s room boasts a row of floor-length 1910 Hinsdale urinals. They’re a testament to a bygone era. A creaky wooden staircase leads to an upstairs dining area. It reopened in the 1970s to accommodate the lunch crowd.

The Old Town Bar has become a favorite backdrop for many films and television shows. House of Pain filmed their “Jump Around” music video here. The bar also starred in “State of Grace” “The Devil’s Own” and many more. It even appeared in the opening montage of “Late Night with David Letterman”.

But the Old Town Bar’s story isn’t just about its glamorous past. In the 1960s it faced closure. Then Larry Meagher an Irish-American took over. He revitalized the bar bringing back its popularity. He created a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Today his children manage the Old Town Bar preserving its legacy.

So raise a glass to the Old Town Bar. It’s more than just a bar. It’s a testament to New York’s enduring spirit and a captivating chapter in the city’s rich history. Enjoy the timeless charm and warm hospitality. Cheers to the Old Town Bar.
