Old State House

“A shilling for your thoughts?” a voice startled me in front of the Old State House. I wasn’t sure if the question was directed at me, or a phantom from centuries past. The Old State House. It stands as a sturdy brick sentinel, whispering tales of revolution and resilience. Built in 1713, it replaced a wooden predecessor lost to flames. Imagine this spot, bustling with merchants and politicians, the heart of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Declaration of Independence echoed from its balcony in 1776, a defiant cry against British rule. Years earlier, in 1761, James Otis’s fiery words against the Writs of Assistance rang out within these walls. John Adams later declared that “the child Independence was born” during that powerful speech. This very square witnessed the horror of the Boston Massacre in 1770, a pivotal moment etched in history. Inside, the Royal Governor’s Council Chamber, Representatives’ Hall, and the Supreme Judicial Court held sway. The Representatives’ Hall boasted one of the first public galleries in the Western world, a testament to the growing desire for transparency in government. Even Queen Elizabeth II graced this spot in 1976, addressing a crowd from the same balcony where the Declaration was first proclaimed to Bostonians. The Old State House also served as Massachusetts’s first capitol until 1798 and later as Boston’s City Hall. Today, this National Historic Landmark, overseen by Revolutionary Spaces, continues to share its stories. It’s a tangible link to our past, reminding us of the struggles and triumphs that shaped our nation. So, was my thought worth a shilling? Standing here, before this witness to history, it certainly feels like it.
