Did you know that the Old Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit has a history spanning decades? Right here before us stands a testament to faith perseverance and community. Its story begins in 1957 with the vision of Reverend Rufus Marshall. He organized the church. The first service was held at 4818 S Avalon. Nine months later the congregation moved to its current location at 8218 S Broadway.
The early years were marked by significant milestones. Reverend Marshall ordained the first deacons. Theodore Floyd David Anthony and Henry Redd were among them. Reverend Marshall retired quickly. Reverend H F Dean took over but only for nine months. In 1959 Reverend Sidney Birdsong became pastor. He oversaw remarkable growth. A cornerstone was laid the mortgage paid. They purchased the annex and parking lot. The church acquired its organ piano and cooling system. The Youth and Inspirational Choirs were also organized under his leadership.
The church continued its journey with Reverend J P Anderson. His tenure involved renovations a new roof and the creation of new church departments. Reverend Clarence D Devereaux then served for 26 years. He oversaw another renovation in 1997. This included the demolition and rebuilding of the sanctuary. He also launched a radio broadcast. His dedication is evident in the many improvements and the continued spiritual growth of the congregation.
