Picture this. You stand before the Old Silver Bowl. A horseshoe-shaped stadium etched against the Nevada sky. It’s quiet now. But once this bowl pulsed with energy.
The Old Silver Bowl. Its history stretches back to 1971. Then it was simply Las Vegas Stadium. A humble 15000-seat structure in the desert. It was the home of the UNLV Rebels. They played their first games here. Old Cashman Field was their previous home.
Seven seasons later the stadium was renamed the Las Vegas Silver Bowl. The Rebels rose to Division I. They were led by Coach Tony Knap. This era is remembered fondly by many fans. The name changed again in 1984. It became the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl. A significant local family contributed greatly. Sam Boyd himself a legend in the hotel and casino industry. The Boyd family’s generous $1.5 million donation led to improvements including a retractable artificial field.
This field was a marvel. Nicknamed the Magic Carpet it rolled onto and off the field. This made the stadium a multi-purpose venue. Concerts races even mud bogs were held here. Thousands of people attended these events. The Magic Carpet was eventually replaced. Natural grass arrived in 1999.
The stadium continued to host various sports and events. The Las Vegas Bowl was held here annually. Numerous teams including the Las Vegas Posse the Las Vegas Outlaws and the Las Vegas Locomotives called it home. International soccer stars graced the field. The USA Sevens rugby tournament was a huge success. Huge crowds of fans came year after year.
The Old Silver Bowl’s final football game took place in 2019. UNLV played San Jose State. It was a bittersweet moment. A new stadium Allegiant Stadium awaited. This marked the end of an era.
Today silence reigns. Yet the memories live on. The echoes of cheers the roar of crowds. The Old Silver Bowl stands as a testament. It shows the passion of sports fans and the evolution of Las Vegas itself. The stadium’s future is uncertain. But one thing is clear its legacy is secured. Its stories will be told for years to come.
