“Like a dollhouse with the rough-hewn charm of a 19th-century ship” is how the Los Angeles Times once described Old St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. That quote perfectly encapsulates the unique character of this historic landmark. Old St. Peter’s Episcopal Church stands as a testament to San Pedro’s rich past.
Built in 1883, Old St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is San Pedro’s oldest church. Local residents used the same hand tools to build ships to erect it. The first service took place in April 1884. It was on Beacon Street between 2nd and 3rd. This location was once known as Nob Hill.
The church’s design showcases the Carpenter Gothic style of Victorian architecture. It originally measured a modest 21 feet by 60 feet. Inside Old St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, you would have found 110 hand-hewn pews. Plain white walls and a lectern supported by an angel carved from redwood completed the interior. The furnishings and paneling were all made of redwood. Sailing vessels brought it from Northern California.
Until around 1900, Old St. Peter’s Episcopal Church served both Catholic and Protestant congregations. At night, its steeple was lit with a lantern. Its position on Nob Hill made it a beacon for ships approaching the port.
In 1904, St. Peter’s moved to Tenth and Mesa Streets in the Vinegar Hill area. During this move, the steeple fell off. It was replaced with a belfry that still exists today.
By 1953, the congregation had outgrown the small church. It only accommodated 100 parishioners. A new St. Peter’s was constructed. The old church was left vacant and faced possible demolition.
Local residents stepped in. They persuaded the city to accept and maintain the church. The condition was that they raise 5000 dollars to move it to Harbor View Memorial Park. They succeeded in fundraising. St. Peter’s was moved to its present location in September 1956. It was deconsecrated and rededicated as a memorial chapel. Today Old St. Peter’s Episcopal Church hosts special occasions. These include weddings and music recitals.
In October 2008, plans emerged to move the church again. This time from Harbor View Cemetery to Green Hills Memorial Park. It is now on the grounds of Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes California. The steeple has been restored.
Old St. Peter’s Episcopal Church has witnessed San Pedro’s transformation. It began as a humble beacon for sailors. Now it stands as a cherished landmark.
