Built about 1890 this stately late Victorian house stands before you. The Old S. J. Brooks Home Plaque marks its spot. This magnificent structure blends various architectural influences and styles. Architect M. T. Eckles and builder T. R. Hertzberg a local businessman created this home.

In 1909 Judge Sidney J Brooks a prominent lawyer and the first judge of the 57th District Court purchased the Old S J Brooks Home. His son Sidney Jr a young man full of life and promise was one of the first US cadets killed training for World War I duty. A tragic loss. This young man’s sacrifice led to Brooks Air Force Base being named in his honor a lasting memorial.

Sidney Jr enrolled at the University of Texas. He left due to poor health. Later he worked as a reporter for The Light. He eventually returned to his studies. Then he joined the Army. After ground instruction at Camp Funston and aviation school in Austin he began flight training at Kelly Field. He tragically died during a solo flight only four months later. Eyewitnesses believed he may have lost consciousness before landing.

The Old S. J. Brooks Home stands as a silent witness to a family’s history. It speaks of success tragedy and the enduring legacy of a son whose life was cut short. The plaque serves not only as a marker but also as a reminder of the sacrifice and service that shaped this city and beyond.
