“History whispers here.” You will be hearing lots of stories about this area as a tour guide. We are standing right before the Old River Plaque. The plaque tells the story of a community built around a waterway called the Old River, now a quiet waterway winding through the heart of rural Chambers County in Texas. Over a century ago, the people who lived here relied upon the Old River. They used it to move goods and people. It was their lifeline, their source of commerce, and their connection to the outside world. But life on the river was hard. Floods and droughts came each year, threatening everything. The people persevered, building their homes and businesses, and raising their families on the banks of the Old River. The area served as a hub for a diverse community. Farmers raised cattle, sheep, hogs, and cotton. They grew corn and rice. There was even a brickyard! There was a time when the community flourished. They even had a post office, a school, and businesses that served their needs. But time, urbanization, and industry changed the landscape drastically. The Old River became a symbol of history now, a reminder of resilience, adaptation, and survival. It was a place where the past was present, and the future was yet to be written. In 1982 the Texas Historical Commission recognized its significance and placed the Old River Plaque to honor the community. Now, you look around and see a town called Old River-Winfree, where the people carry on their legacy to this day. The Old River Plaque is a reminder that history is not just about the past. It is about the people and the places that have shaped our lives and built our community.
