Across the Han River stands the Old River Crossing Bridge. Its sturdy frame whispers tales of a turbulent past. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s the Nguyen Van Troi and Tran Thi Ly Bridge a vital artery in Da Nang’s history.
Built in 1965 by American contractor RMK the bridge initially served a grim purpose. It carried weapons for the US military. This first road bridge across the Han River funneled war materials from Tien Sa port to Da Nang’s city center. The bridge lacked pedestrian walkways a stark contrast to the modern structures we see today.
Originally unnamed the bridge later received its current name. It honored Quang Nam hero Nguyen Van Troi after the reunification of Vietnam. Before the year 2000 and the completion of the Han River Bridge the Nguyen Van Troi Bridge underwent repairs. It remained a crucial link between the east and west banks of the Han River.
The Tran Thi Ly section of the bridge also holds a unique history. Its predecessor the De Lattre de Tassigny Bridge was constructed starting in 1951. This design included plans for multiple spans only one of which was ever built. It too underwent changes. The bridge was renamed Trinh Minh The Bridge and later Tran Thi Ly Bridge in 1975. The original Tran Thi Ly Bridge was demolished in 2003. It was replaced with a new bridge featuring a striking European-inspired design resembling a large sail catching the wind.
Today the Old River Crossing Bridge stands as a testament to Da Nang’s growth. It is a quiet observer of the city’s transformation from a wartime hub to a vibrant modern metropolis. Though overshadowed by newer bridges its historical significance remains undeniable. The bridge is a peaceful haven a favorite spot for local youth.
