A silent sentinel stands before us. The Old Lighthouse in Chennai. Its weathered granite whispers tales of bygone eras. It’s more than just a structure. It’s a living monument. A testament to Chennai’s rich maritime history.

This magnificent lighthouse isn’t the first to grace Chennai’s shores. Oh no. Its story begins much earlier. The first lighthouse was a humble affair. A lantern perched atop a building in Fort St George. It used coconut oil. Imagine the flickering flame guiding ships home. That light stood tall from 1796 to 1844. Then it was replaced.

Our Old Lighthouse the second of its kind was built between 1838 and 1844. A stunning Doric column. It soared 125 feet high. It’s made of granite from Pallavaram quarries. Each stone carefully placed. A testament to skilled craftsmanship. This impressive structure used 15 Argand lamps. These lamps with parabolic reflectors produced a powerful light. Mariners could see its beam 20 miles out at sea.

For fifty years it guided ships safely. But times change. As the city grew taller so did its needs. The High Court building rose majestically in 1892. Its tallest dome now eclipsed the Old Lighthouse. Ships struggled to see it.

So a new light was needed. The lantern from the Old Lighthouse was moved. It was placed atop the High Court’s dome. This became the third lighthouse of Madras. It functioned from 1894 to 1977. This lantern room was quite the engineering marvel. It had a special kerosene lamp. It produced a powerful 18000 candelas of light. A twin-flash every 30 seconds.

This ingenious arrangement wasn’t without its dramas. During World War I a German warship attacked. They aimed for the High Court lighthouse but thankfully missed. A local ballad celebrates this. It remembers the near miss.

The Old Lighthouse remained active until the new lighthouse was built in 1977. That modern structure stands proudly on Marina Beach. It’s a testament to technological advancements. But the Old Lighthouse endures. It stands as a symbol of Chennai’s resilience. Its beauty continues to inspire. It reminds us of a time when the sea was the lifeblood of the city. It’s a beautiful example of colonial-era architecture. It deserves our respect. It’s a part of our shared heritage. A reminder of the enduring spirit of Chennai.
