Imagine dusty adobe walls rising from the desert floor. This is the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park. It marks the spot of the first permanent settlement in Las Vegas.

The Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park stands as a testament to Nevada’s past. It all began in 1855 when Mormon missionaries arrived. They sought a place to build a fort. William Bringhurst led them to a creek-fed site. This creek offered the only free-flowing water for miles.

The fort became a vital midpoint. It connected Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. The Mormons built the fort in the New Mexico folk carpenter style. The 14-foot adobe walls stretched 150 feet. Though called a fort, it sheltered settlers and travelers. It wasn’t a military base.

But why here in this harsh landscape? The Mormons aimed to facilitate travel. They wanted to establish missionary work. This fort would serve those journeying between New Mexico and California.

Life at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort wasn’t easy. The settlers irrigated fields. They hoped for successful crops. Mining efforts nearby proved disappointing. Internal disagreements arose. The Utah War broke out. In 1857, the Mormons abandoned the fort.

The fort’s story didn’t end there. In the 1860s, U.S. Army troops briefly occupied it. It was even called Fort Baker during the Civil War. Octavius Gass later took over. He renamed the area Los Vegas Rancho. Gass improved the irrigation.

Ownership changed hands over the years. The Daughters of Utah Pioneers worked to preserve it. Finally, in 1991, Nevada acquired the site. It became a state park.

Today, the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park features a visitor center. Exhibits tell the fort’s story. You can see artifacts and photos. The park also includes a partial reconstruction of the fort. A re-creation of the Las Vegas Creek adds to the experience. The Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort stands as the birthplace of modern Las Vegas.
